She selected earrings, and a sparkling diamond necklace that was worth more than most of her customers would see in their lifetimes. Layers of crinolines and petticoats came next, and once she’d fastened them, she walked to her dressing table and sat before the mirror, applying a slight hint of rouge to her high cheekbones, then repeating the color in darker tones to her lips. The ritual of dressing eased her nerves, as it always did, and her spirits lifted as she closed the hooks on her corset and carefully tugged free the hand-woven froth of lace that decorated her chemise. She slipped the silk dressing gown off her shoulders and reached for the soft, ribbon-trimmed cotton drawers. She’d laid out her clothes before bathing, a custom she often found soothing. With a barely audible sigh, Chantille pushed herself from a casual slouch against the window-frame and went to her bed. The quality was another wasted effort on her part, though she steadfastly refused to compromise it. They cared only about the quantity of drink and companionship that was to be found at The Palace. Her money and family meant nothing to the hordes of men who flocked to her place of business. She’d arrived in San Francisco several years ago, bright-eyed and determined to be 1 The scents and sounds of the Barbary Coast wafted up to her, assaulting her senses now where they had once caressed. Those dictates had done their part to age her spirit well beyond her twentyfive years of life. She’d resented it, deeply, and because of it, she’d made choices that weighed heavily on her. Born in the midst of that conflict, Chantille had never enjoyed the peace and happiness her parents had known in their youth. The world her parents spoke about with such longing life before the Civil War had torn everything to pieces. For several more moments, Chantille L’Amour delayed the increasingly wearisome task of her work and allowed her heart to pine for a simpler world in which to live. The last, faint rays of the glowing afternoon were giving way to the steady encroachment of evening as she stared out at the glittering, sundappled beauty of San Francisco Bay. When I first started writing as an adult back in the early 1990s, I first used a typewriter, then moved to Word Perfect when I bought a PC. IA Writer has two main attributes that set it apart: simplicity, and plain text purity With its simple aesthetics and no-nonsense setup, I immediately felt at home. The developers did away with this several years ago, which I think is a shame, as this added a subtle layer of interest. I also liked the paper-like texture used as a background in the early days. Reader, I’m easily distracted and love typewriters.Ī pure writing app, it lacked customisation options, and had a beautiful monospace font. I was immediately attracted by its typewriter-like interface and lack of distractions. I’ve owned a copy of Writer since its first lunch in 2010. Here’s my experience with Writer from Information Architects, and how I use it now. It's fantastic for composing blog posts using Markdown, or just writing the next chapter of your book in regular text.įor $5 on iOS you really can't go wrong the $30 Mac app doesn't offer anything more (other than the larger screen space) that the iOS versions do, but I look at the Mac version as supporting further development, and of course it's great having all the same documents right to hand on both platforms.I’ve mentioned iA Writer in several previous posts, which indicated the app deserves coverage of its own. The focus mode and other features really help with getting into the flow, and the lack of Word's labyrinthian options means you focus on writing first, editing later. Writer hits the right balance (for me) of a simple interface but there's just the right amount of tools. but it's just TOO plain-text for some things. I really enjoy using iA Writer on iOS thanks to its cloud sync with the iPhone and Mac version. There might be a thesaurus app that does that it’s a great idea if there isn’t. Is there an editor that, as you type, automatically looks up the word you just typed in the Thesaurus and displays alternatives (as opposed to autocompletes) on the Touch Bar? Word processors and slick presentation packages are how you present your problem solution to a wider audience. Whiteboards and text editors are where you really solve the problem. Using IA Writer as a prelude and set-up process for what will eventually become a document ready for publication is similar to using a white board (or mind map) to coelesce concepts for what will later turned into a PowerPoint/Keynote presentation. The longer you can stay away from being bothered by fonts, formatting, visual presentation, and typical document overhead clap trap the better quality of thought you'll get around what really matters - communicating your ideas or concepts. If you veer off into the weeds on your train of thought or coherency it's cheap to start over and/or hack up what you've already done. Best of all they are low investment in terms of your time and effort. Simple editors like IA Writer don't get in the way of your thinking or impede the stream of consciousness with fickleness. I may be old fashioned, but I like to start documents in a simple text tool like IA Writer or Textastic and later move the text to a full fledged word processor only after I've captured the essence of what I'm trying to communicate in the document. I actually prefer tagging over autocorrection. IA Writer will still mark misspellings and you can right-click on the flagged misspellings to select a correction. You can start a sentence with lower case using IA Writer if you uncheck the "Correct Spelling" setting in Editor preferences. Meanwhile, West dives headfirst into the competition to prove himself while Nolan and Bishop, who is refusing to play, find themselves dealing with a mob-connected banker. Bradford plays to win, even bribing a dispatcher to get the best calls, which worries Chen. Nolan struggles to deal with his breakup with Chen just as the TOs start an annual competition to see who can get the most arrests in a single shift. Meanwhile, Chen defends her relationship with Nolan to Bishop during their patrol, prompting Nolan and Chen to have a talk about their relationship. Bradford later takes West to meet an agoraphobe who gives West advice on facing his fears. Bradford, however, learns about West's struggles when he freezes during a shootout and enraged, confronts Lopez over it. Lopez takes Nolan to court and Nolan ends up chasing an escaped prisoner, leading to a potentially career-making bust for the pair. He tasks the rookies with gaining insight into their new TOs. Grey tests the rookies by assigning them new TOs, partnering Nolan with Lopez, West with Bradford and Chen with Bishop. Elsewhere, an arrest of a former college athlete causes West and Lopez to talk about alternative careers to police work since Lopez still doubts West's ability to handle the job. Meanwhile, Chen helps Bradford as he readjusts to being back on duty while also trying to help his drug addicted wife, who reveals to Chen she was once a narcotics cop. The precinct learns that the thieves are part of a gang who have pulled off a string of heists and they begin searching for the remaining gang members. Nolan and Bishop chase a group of thieves and Nolan loses a bag of stolen money when a street performer runs off with it. Bishop is able to get Nolan a new vehicle, which he nearly crashes on his first drive. Chen finds out that Bradford who's recovering from being shot in the previous episode intentionally got her assigned to a poor officer to test her commitment. Captain Andersen thanks him for his success, but reminds him that it is not his job to punish criminals. While apprehending him, Bishop stops Nolan from beating the suspect in a rage. A kidnapping victim is rescued, and Nolan and Bishop obtain a lead on the kidnapper. Nolan is assigned a rusty old car as punishment for damaging his vehicle. West is able to subdue a suspect without assistance. Nolan continues to face difficulties in navigating between his civilian instincts and how they affect his actions as a cop. Chen is stuck with a lazy new training officer while Bradford recovers, and winds up arresting a man for shoplifting. Nolan and Bishop arrest an addict for possession of drugs, but then learn that she stabbed a teenager dead in an argument. She then forces him to handle the arrest of a man on PCP, which he pulls off. West is questioned as to why he didn't fire his weapon, but Lopez covers for him. Nolan prevents a woman from killing herself after she tries to jump off of the Hollywood Sign after her wedding does not go as planned. Grey responds that if that is true, nothing Grey puts Nolan through will deter him. Nolan tells Grey that he believes being a cop might be his calling. Grey informs Nolan that he will do everything in his power to discourage him from continuing to serve, as he fears that Nolan's inexperience and age will endanger the lives of his officers. Also joining Nolan as rookie officers are Jackson West, son of a high-ranking LAPD officer and eager to live up to the family legacy, and Lucy Chen, who became a cop against the wishes of her therapist parents and is carrying on a secret affair with Nolan despite the risk it poses to her career. Nolan's first few days on the job are marked by a domestic dispute that quickly escalates out of hand (during which Nolan witnesses his first death), an unbalanced father who leaves his child in a locked car on a hot day, and an escaped felon who quickly tests Nolan in ways he never expected. His assignment to the force, particularly the Mid-Wiltshire Division of the LAPD is met with skepticism from his fellow officers, particularly his watch commander, Sergeant Wade Grey, and his training officer Talia Bishop. This informal response works well, it does a good job at letting the other person know that you don’t need to be thanked, it was something you were fine with doing it, so it does not need to be mentioned. The response says that you “got” the person, meaning that you were happy to help them and you will always help them. This response works well in informal situations, especially around friends. This response works well, it is pretty informal but does a good job at setting the other person’s mind at ease by saying that whatever you did for them was nothing to worry about and you don’t need to be thanked. This response works well, it is pretty informal but does a good job at setting the other person’s mind at ease by saying that whatever you did for them was no problem and not a hassle. There is hardly a scenario where it is not welcome as a response to “thank you”. You’re welcome works perfectly in both formal and informal situations. If one of your friends or peers or family members say “thank you” you will still want to reply to seem polite but you can use one of these informal responses. It makes it seem like whatever you did was not a huge problem and you’d be willing to do it again, making you look like a good person. This response is good in a formal setting for the same reason as the above response. This will make you look like a good employee, future-in-law, citizen, etc. This response works in a formal setting because it implies that whatever you did for the other person is something you didn’t mind doing and would be willing to do again. This response is pretty similar to the one above but the addition of “very” ups the intensity of the response and makes it seem like you put more thought into your response than if you had simply just said, “you’re welcome”. There is hardly a scenario were responding to “thank you” with “you’re welcome” would be considered anything but polite. This response is the stereotypical response because it is often the best response. When someone says to you “thank you for coming” It is a very polite and formal response to say “ thank you for having me/inviting me/ etc.” 2. This response works well in formal situations, especially in job interviews. When someone who you want to impress says “thank you” or is in earshot when someone else says “thank you” or if you are just in general in a formal situation, these are some responses that would work best to make you seem polite. It is all about reading a room and assessing a situation and who you are talking to when you have to decide between a formal and informal response. The informal response can still be polite without being as formal as a formal response. Informal responses are better suited for more casual scenarios like a conversation with friends, classmates, co-workers, or immediate family members. A formal response shows that you are a kind person who is respectful of your superiors. Such as bosses, future bosses, hopeful romantic partners, future in-laws, or sometimes random people on the street. When someone says “thank you”, you have a choice to be either formal or informal.įormal responses are better for when in the company of people you want to impress. But what? It all depends on you and the situation. It is hard to know what response to go with when someone says thank you. However, the problem is, what are you supposed to say back? How do you respond? What is the best reply to “Thank you”? Hearing thank you is just a nice and pleasant thing. It is nice to know that whatever it is you do is appreciated by the people around you.
In the live and online coding courses offered by Tekkie Uni, your children will learn how to program, how to create their own videos, how to play chess, or how to create their very own apps and games in a supportive environment. What you do know for sure is that they should receive the right tools for them to be ready to face any challenge and to turn their craziest ideas into applaudable realities. Just as it happened with Galileo, you have no idea how your kids’ ideas and innovations can change our world. When our kids have a fever, we can detect it thanks to Galileo! Why? Because the telescope improvement wasn’t all he also invented the compass and the thermometer. Not so long after that, he left school without getting a degree.ĩ. Even though this happened right after he wanted to become a monk, he realized that he wasn’t into medicine but rather felt more attracted to both physics and mathematics, so he focused on these areas. Galileo began his studies as a student of medicine. Do you see what kind of things can happen when boosting our kids’ skills? Your children can change the world!Ĩ. He was the first person to realize the moon is full of craters and mountains, everything by pointing his telescope to the sky. Lippershey invented an earlier version of the telescope in 1608 and in the same year, Galileo learned about this new thing and totally improved it.ħ. Who can be credited with the invention of the original telescope is actually Hans Lippershey. What he did was improving and optimizing an artifact that he did not create from scratch. Although some people might think that Galileo was the one who invented the telescope, he actually didn’t. In the same year in which Galileo published his last book, considered his major masterpiece, he went completely blind.Ħ. That being said, he received renowned visitors such as the philosopher Thomas Hobbes and the poet John Milton.ĥ. During the 10 years he spent under home arrest, his visits were extremely restricted. The church leaders of the time did not take kindly to this news and he got sentenced to house arrest until the end of his days.Ĥ. He was the one that confirmed that all planets are moving in orbits around the sun and not the Earth. Galileo was the first person to ever point a telescope to the sky, making outstanding observations on the stars and the cosmos.ģ. Einstein once said that only the work of Galileo can be seen as the true beginning of astronomy and physics.Ģ. We all associate his names with the discovery of constellations and of some new aspects about the universe we weren’t aware of until Galileo’s publications.īut, how much do you really know about Galileo Galilei? Take a look at these 9 interesting facts and let yourself be surprised.ġ. We all know at least one thing he said, invented, or improved. Galileo Galilei: 9 facts about the man who optimized the telescope! In the next few paragraphs, you are going to learn more about Galileo, his discoveries, his legacy, and his points of view on life, the cosmos, and innovation. One of the main things we can learn from Galileo and his legacy is the importance of having a strong critical thinking ability, and how important it is to maintain our capacity for wonder alive! Well, Galileo Galilei, the king of the cosmos, had a very interesting life story and a track of inventions and discoveries that can leave anyone astonished. Can you imagine being the first person to realize the planets actually orbit around the sun and not the Earth? Can you imagine how your face would be when seeing that the moon has craters and mountains? Many of the things we take for granted today were a reason to be amazed when Galileo discovered them. Even though these lyrics from the popular Coldplay song were written a few centuries after Galileo’s life, this might have been what he had in mind when discovering a thousand things about the cosmos. |
